Herculaneum has been preserved like no other archaeological site in the world. A city buried under 16 meters of ash and mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. This debris layer saved and preserved the two floor domus houses with their architecture and internal decoration intact, including elements in wood and marble, decorations, jewellery and even organic remains such as food, which provide a unique insight into the daily life of this ancient population.
