A BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT THE TOWER OF PISA

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, known worldwide for its distinctive tilt, is one of Italy’s most iconic monuments and a symbol of the city of Pisa. Construction of the tower began in 1173 as the bell tower for the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli. From the very beginning, however, there were problems with the tower’s stability due to the soft and unstable ground on which it was built. This very ground caused the famous lean that has made the tower renowned all over the world.

Construction was halted several times, initially due to technical issues and later because of wars involving the Republic of Pisa. The tower was not completed until 1372, almost two centuries after construction began. About 56 meters tall and consisting of eight stories, the tower is built from white marble and contains an internal staircase of 294 steps. In the centuries that followed, the tower was the subject of numerous studies and stabilization attempts, often motivated by fears that it might collapse. Between 1990 and 2001, the tower was closed to the public for major restoration and reinforcement works, which ensured its safety without altering its original tilt. Today, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is not only a masterpiece of medieval architecture but also a symbol of human resilience and ingenuity, continuing to fascinate tourists and scholars from around the world.

WHAT IS THE TOWER OF PISA TODAY?

Today, the Tower of Pisa is much more than just a bell tower. It stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of Italy and an internationally renowned tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world every year. Located in the marvelous Piazza dei Miracoli, together with the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Monumental Cemetery, the tower is part of a site declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After extensive and complex restoration and stabilization work, the tower has been made safe, and today it is possible to visit and climb to the top to enjoy a unique view over the entire city of Pisa and the surrounding countryside. Inside, by ascending its 294 marble steps, one can clearly feel the building’s characteristic tilt, which makes the experience even more fascinating. In addition to being an extraordinary tourist attraction, the Tower of Pisa continues to be the subject of engineering and architectural studies, thanks to its exceptional structure and unique history. The tower also regularly hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions, helping to keep its importance alive in the Italian artistic and cultural landscape. Today, the Tower of Pisa is a symbol of resilience, beauty, and human ingenuity.
