Located in the heart of the historic center, Juliet’s House is one of the city’s most famous symbols, made legendary by the story of Romeo and Juliet, the tragic love story told by William Shakespeare. While strolling through the picturesque streets of Verona, you’ll find the famous doorway that leads to the house’s courtyard, where you can admire the renowned balcony from which, according to legend, Juliet spoke to Romeo.
A visit to this evocative medieval residence allows you to immerse yourself in a bygone atmosphere: you can explore rooms furnished with period furniture, observe theatrical costumes, and discover historical objects related to the couple’s story. An unmissable experience is leaving a love message on the wall of the courtyard, following a long-standing and heartfelt tradition, or taking a photo next to Juliet’s statue—touching her hand is said to bring good luck in love. Moreover, Juliet’s House is the perfect starting point to discover Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage city, famous for its art, history, and romantic atmosphere. Whether you are a literature enthusiast, a traveler in search of emotions, or simply intrigued by the legend, Juliet’s House will win you over with its magical and timeless charm, giving you unforgettable memories of your visit to Verona.
A BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT JULIET'S HOUSE
Juliet’s House, located in the heart of Verona, is one of the city’s most iconic and visited places. This medieval building, dating back to the 13th century, is situated on Via Cappello and is traditionally identified as the home of the Cappelletti family, who, according to legend, inspired Shakespeare’s Capulets. The house actually belonged to a Veronese family named Cappello, whose coat of arms is still visible on the façade.
Over the centuries, the house has undergone numerous transformations. At the beginning of the 20th century, the City of Verona purchased the building and carried out significant restorations to give it back the romantic appearance that still fascinates visitors today. It was during this restoration that the famous balcony was added, an element that has become an eternal symbol of Romeo and Juliet’s ill-fated love. Today, Juliet’s House hosts a museum where you can trace the history of the legend and admire furnishings, costumes, and testimonies related to the famous tragedy. Even though there is no historical evidence directly linking the house to Juliet herself, the charm of the story and the romantic atmosphere continue to attract dreamers from all over the world.
WHAT IS JULIET'S HOUSE TODAY?
Today, Juliet’s House is one of the main museums and symbolic landmarks of Verona. The building, restored and enhanced by the Municipality, welcomes thousands of visitors each year who wish to immerse themselves in the romantic atmosphere of the legend of Romeo and Juliet. Inside, you can admire period furnishings, paintings, theatrical costumes, and objects linked both to Shakespeare’s famous tragedy and to daily life in medieval Verona. The famous balcony, added during the twentieth-century restorations, has become the most photographed spot in the museum and an icon for lovers from all over the world. In addition to visiting the interior rooms, tourists can leave a love message on the wall of the courtyard and touch Juliet’s statue, following a tradition believed to bring good luck in love.
CURIOSITIES ABOUT JULIET'S HOUSE
Did you know that Juliet’s famous balcony is not original? In fact, it was only added in the 1930s, using fragments of an ancient medieval sarcophagus, to make the house even more evocative and romantic.
Did you know that the house receives thousands of letters addressed to Juliet every year? People from all over the world write to ask for advice about love, and a group of volunteers called the “Juliet Club” personally replies to many of the messages received.
Did you know that the bronze statue of Juliet in the house’s courtyard has a polished right hand? That’s because visitors, following a popular tradition, touch the statue’s hand to bring luck and happiness in their love life.
